SHEARING DAY 2008

On Friday, June 6th we held our annual shearing day. Many visitors came to observe this interesting transformation. Our shearer is Vic Renner of Hairloom Alpacas, Clarksville, TN. Also helping us were Pam and Ed Klocek of High Forest Alpacas and Sharla Bowman who took the beautiful photographs of our event, videotaped the shearing, wrestled our llama and trimmed the nails of our alpacas. Many thanks to our dedicated helpers. It was a very hot, very long day but all of the camelids were shorn without incident. Thanks also to our visitors Sammye and Bill Lawson and our guests from Buffalo River Services and others who dropped by. We enjoyed your company.

Lacey was happy to get that fiber off.
Our visitors enjoyed the exhibition.
Sharla trimmed the nails like a pro.
Making precision work look easy.
Snip snip here, snip snip there and a couple of tra-la-las. That's how we work the day away in the merry old land of OZ.
Denella enjoys the pampering.
Now it's Olivia's turn.
Olivia smiles for her treatment.
Our cria's have the finest fiber anywhere.
Jeffrey says..a little off the top and sides please.
baby alpaca fiber is the softest of all.

Vic Renner explains the ins and outs of shearing.
Baby alpacas take as long as the adults to shear.
2008 is our seventh year breeding and shearing alpacas.
The tilt-up shearing table is a must for this job.
Yes, that is alpaca spit on my shirt. A first in seven years.
The table's leg restraints keep the alpaca still during the process.
We were the first to bring alpacas to Lewis County.
Notice the cut-outs on the sides of the table. This allows the shearer better access to the alpaca.
Experienced helps makes a tough job easier.
Leon is almost finished.
Anne Kent of Dutchtown Farms
Last but not least...our herdsire...Choco de Leon
Choco's fiber is amazing
Choco's fiber is so dense it literally slowed the clippers down to a crawl.

This long day is nearly done.
The shears would grind down to a halt when cutting Choco's awesome fiber.
Looks like Choco is waiting for a teeth trimming
Say cheese...Choco!
Trimming teeth.
Now the toenails please!
Now we are done.
